STEREO SPOTLIGHT #9

It’s been a busy month full of birthdays and super-colds, but Stereo Spotlight is back with a line-up of more cracking tunes from up-and-comings artists and bands. As always, if you or someone you know are an independent musician that deserve more recognition, drop a message on Instagram @steves_stereo to discuss being featured in a future article. Alternatively email relevant press releases to stevencroydon@yahoo.co.uk – you’ll be tagged in the post when it goes live as well as added to the full Spotify playlist with all the previous submissions (right).

Right, enough admin, on with the music!

Michelle Fabre – You Stole My Makeup

First up this month is New York-based artist Michelle Fabre, with the sassy You Stole My Makeup. The song is a pop banger with electronic elements, which came about after a real-life incident in Michelle’s life. Building it from an initial idea to an overall concept shows Michelle is a developed and mature artist, while still being able to have some fun with it, resulting in this bold, snappy, and catchy pop track. Michelle has been involved in the music world since she was just four years old, and after being part of various commercials and jingles in her early days, is ready to blossom as a fully-fledged singer-songwriter. She’s ready to put her money where her mouth is, for she recently released her debut album Find Your Fire, including this track and many more for you to sink your teeth into!

Alex Spinney – I Remember

Up next is British singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Alex Spinney with his debut release I Remember. He describes his sound as “piano-based pop”, and this track specifically as “looking back at a relationship that was once thriving, but is now breaking down.” What’s more, he does something which I love in a song – juxtaposing the impending and building sadness of the lyrics with the celebratory, almost gospel-esque elements towards the end of the song. While young and only just dropping his first single, Alex is clearly an artist with a vision, and a viewpoint which seems honest and fresh and relatable. He is in the process of recording the remainder of his EP in London, so keep your eyes out for his follow-up soon!

Semi Precious – Forget U

Someone who has been on my radar for a while is Southeast London’s Semi Precious, who released his LP Post-Euphoria back in May of this year. On Instagram, he described the theme of the album as “that dawn-time phase that follows a night out, just before everyday reality seeps in,” a hopeful and unique perspective that goes hand in hand with this cool experimental pop music. One personal highlight of the album is Forget U, which really encapsulates that vibe of the euphoria and abandon you may feel as your night ends and the dawn breaks. What’s more Semi Precious has been releasing music for years so be sure to check out his back catalogue too!

Amaya – Demons In The Dark

Last but not least this week is Amaya, with her new track Demons In The Dark. Born in Hong Kong, and now based in London, she describes her song-writing style as “dramatic” and “cinematic”, something which are always good qualities in my book. Demons In The Dark is exactly that, a song which feels sombre and sultry almost, but builds to an impressive and poignant end. A nice blend of dark pop and choral mystery which entices me to keep listening – check it out!
